Fireside Chat with Bonnie Garmus, Author of “Lessons in Chemistry”
Women in Chemicals had the pleasure of hosting Bonnie Garmus, Author of Lessons in Chemistry on November 15th. Her best selling novel follows the story of Elizaeth Zott, a brilliant chemist who is forced to become a TV Chef when she finds herself a young, single mother. Our interview with Bonnie spans many themes, including:
Raising Children While Working
It was an honor for Women in Chemicals to have had the opportunity to hear from three terrific women in our community about their journeys in raising children while working. We started our panel discussion with hearing from each of our panelist about her family, her career, and the overlap of the two when it was time to start a family.
Building Your Mental Health Toolkit
WIC had the opportunity to learn from Candice Heidebrecht on World Mental Health Day 2022. We learned from Candice the keys to maintaining ourselves and the relationships that we hold with others. Additionally, we discussed steps that we can take to properly respond to biases both in larger group settings and one on one.
Working through Pregnancy and Birth
It is an honor for Women in Chemicals to have had the opportunity to hear from four terrific women in our community about their journeys in working through pregnancy and birth. We started our panel discussion learning from each panelist their family planning processes, each sharing their unique stories. We talked about if there ever truly is a right time to have children, and the way that their priorities are constantly changing since finding out about their pregnancies (Alexandra is currently expecting!) or since having children.
Mind Full or Mindful? Decluttering the Busy Leader’s mind
Ft. Harriet Stein
Harriet is currently President of Big Toe In the Water, LLC. and is a Mindfulness Teacher, Coach & Consultant. We spent our session learning from Harriet's life experiences and how she responded mindfully to certain situations. We were introduced to common signs of burnout, and that Mindfulness isn't always about being happy; it is about feeling in the moment and being authentic. We spent a bulk of our session engaging in a breathing exercise.
Managing Burnout
Special thanks to our panelists, Meg, Beth, Nicole, & Christie, for their insights, courage, and realism. We discussed how burnout shows up for us and what our symptoms of burnout look like, highlighting specifically the point in burnout where we may lose all motivation entirely, while also acknowledging that burnout can be different for everyone.
